Backyard Wedding Kitchen Safety: Tips for Safe Outdoor Catering
Backyard weddings and celebrations in open fields have become increasingly popular, offering beautiful scenery and unforgettable experiences. However, remote venues often come with one major challenge—they weren't designed to support a commercial kitchen.
Whether you're setting up a temporary cooking tent or creating a fully functioning mobile kitchen, safety should always be the number one priority. At Ultimate Events, we provide the commercial cooking equipment and commercial kitchen rentals needed to help caterers safely prepare and serve meals at outdoor weddings and events.
A beautiful backyard wedding begins long before guests arrive. By locating underground utilities before setup, storing propane safely, and using professional mobile kitchen equipment, you can reduce risks and keep your event running smoothly.
Whether you're catering an intimate backyard reception or a large celebration in a remote field, Ultimate Events Catering Rentals has the equipment you need to create a safe, efficient outdoor kitchen.
Before the first guest arrives, here are two important safety considerations every event planner and caterer should keep in mind.
Many outdoor weddings require tents, temporary fencing, utility poles, generators, or other equipment that may involve driving stakes or digging into the ground.
Before breaking ground, it's important to know what's below the surface.
In Minnesota, Gopher State One Call serves as the state's one-call notification system for all utility inspections. According to the organization’s website, it "serves as the communication link between public underground facility operators and anyone planning to break ground" (2026). By submitting a locate request before digging, underground utility operators can mark the approximate locations of buried utility lines, helping reduce the risk of striking gas, electrical, communication, or water lines.
This simple step can help prevent:
- Damage to underground utilities
- Dangerous gas leaks
- Electrical hazards
- Costly repairs
- Event delays
Even if your setup only requires driving tent stakes or anchoring equipment, checking for underground utilities first is an important part of event safety.
Many outdoor catering operations rely on propane-powered cooking equipment because it provides flexibility at venues without permanent gas service. However, propane must be stored correctly to reduce fire hazards.
According to Michael Zendano in the International Code Council (ICC) Compliance Center article "Safety Tips for Storing Propane Tanks," propane tanks should be:
- Kept upright
- Stored outdoors
- Positioned away from heat and ignition sources
- Placed in low-traffic areas where they are less likely to be bumped or tipped over
A good rule of thumb is to maintain “at least a 10-foot buffer between propane tanks and cooking areas, tents, or places where guests gather,” says Zendano of the ICC. This separation helps reduce the risk of accidental ignition while allowing catering staff to work safely.
A temporary outdoor kitchen should function just as safely as a permanent commercial kitchen.
When planning your setup:
- Position cooking equipment on level, stable ground.
- Keep walkways clear to reduce trips and falls.
- Separate cooking, food preparation, and guest areas whenever possible.
- Ensure adequate ventilation around cooking equipment.
- Keep fire extinguishers readily accessible near cooking stations.
Taking time to organize the workspace helps protect both catering staff and wedding guests throughout the event.
